Tom Waits: we put some, the sound of vinyl, pops and clicks of vinyl on there to try and go back in time a little bit. Actually, it’s not pops and clicks, that was barbecue chicken
Terry Gross: ya it has that kind of sizzle of the surface noise
Tom Waits: it sounds exactly like vinyl you know, if you hold the microphone up to your barbecue, it’s the same sound actually…
The eclectic Daniel Johnston is best known for handing out hand recorded cassette tapes of his music to people he met (with original artwork). Plagued by mental health issues and an obsession with eyeballs and satan, Daniel Johnston is the premier underground buzz hero of the 1980s Austin new sincerity scene. He recorded “Hi How are You” with a chord organ on a cassette deck 2-Track. He had no method to make multiple copies without recording his album word for word each time. Warped, manic, and obsessive, Daniel Johnston’s extensive catalog ranges from trivial to treasured. Absolutely worth checking out the documentary “The Devil and Daniel Johnston” 2006.
